TRIVIA ANSWER:

.........Michigan's Dennis Franklin quarterbacked Michigan during the 1972, 1973, and 1974 seasons.  Michigan went 30-2-1 during that span - with both losses and the tie against Ohio State - and therefore Ohio State went to the Rose Bowl every year.  In those days, only one team from each conference could go to a bowl game so Michigan stayed at home.  That changed in 1975 when Ohio State (led by Archie Griffith) defeated Michigan 21-14.  Runner up Michigan played (and lost) in the Orange Bowl....but 1975 was too late for hard luck quarterback Dennis Franklin - Franklin graduated in 1974 with probably the most wins over a 3 year span without a bowl bid to show for it.
